What is an IP address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a numeric label for your device on the network. IPv4 looks like four groups from 0–255; IPv6 is longer hexadecimal notation. Your public IP is what sites see when you browse without a tunnel; private addresses (e.g. 192.168.x.x) are used only behind your router.

What is an IP address?

An IP address is a unique number that identifies your device on the internet. Websites use it to route traffic back to you and can infer your approximate location and network from it.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

Why does my IP address change?

Most home connections use dynamic IPs that your provider reassigns periodically. Mobile networks and proxies also change the IP that websites see.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

IP geolocation is usually accurate to the country and city level, but not to a street address. It reflects your ISP registration, which can differ from your exact location.
